MMOs offer a chance for players to play in a shared world, which leads to fierce competition and collaboration. Over the testing period and through release, players have built wiki’s, guides, and thoroughly plumbed the depths of the crafting system and combat builds.

On twitter, twitch, and reddit the game has people talking, analyzing, memeing and planning events.

Everyone is having a blast with Amazon’s first fully released game. That is, everyone except for facebook.

Facebook groups are generally degenerate places for any community but the New World centric groups are a whole new level of senselessness. Similar to other Facebook video game communities, the groups tend to be quite large and unruly, however, no other group except for maybe FFXIV comes close to the degree of repeated grievance posting.

Hundreds of posts a day, thousands a week, complaining: I want a mount, quests take too long, there’s only a couple kinds of enemies. These will be broken up by member made polls asking if people want a mount, which will immediately and irrevocably swing to the ‘no goddamn mounts’ side of the spectrum within minutes of posting. Other members attempt to point out that if you use fast travel options, trips around Aeternum are quick, often times, getting from a quest giver to a quest location and back, can be faster than in other AAA MMOs. More gifted members of society will attempt to explain that you can take on more than one quest, and if you look in an area and talk to quest givers you will notice that town board objectives, faction missions, and side story quests seem to line up. Other’s will point out that on the paths to and from quest objectives there are chests and gathering points you chouls be taking advantage of. And, finally, people make it past level twenty and make it into Brightwood, Weavers Fen, Cutlass Keys, and Ebonscale and realize just how many different types of inhabitants Aeternum has to offer up to be killed by players.

By all means, please post your memes on reddit. Talk shit about the Syndicate on twitter. But save yourself the second hand embarrassment and avoid Facebook groups.
